Trademark applications had a strong recovery in 2010
According to statistics from the World Intellectual Property Organization, WIPO, the number of international trademark applications filed in the 85 member states that are party to the Madrid Protocol have risen after a fall in 2009.
In the year 2010, 39,687 applications were filed before WIPO which is more than the year 2009 in the rate of 13 percent, however this rate is still less than the record of 42,075 filings in 2008.
More than half of last year’s applications came from Europe, either via the national trademark authorities or through the European Union’s trademark office, OHIM. Germany ranked first among the major applicants, followed by the USA and China.
Top of the rankings among the most designated member states was China, followed by the EU, USA and Russia.
